A CONCERT STORY One of the best things about Mariah's concert was that she sang in a more impromp style unlike past televised concerts where she sings exactly like the album versions, she also sang to remix versions. The following is the set list along with a little info: Fly Away (walked on to stage and saw her rise on the platform because of highwinds)Normally she would first be seen risen on a platform as brown fabric rips away fromthe risen podium. CHOREOGRAPHED by Debbie Allen Emotions:she wore a light peach sequenced mini skirt with matching tube top and a white lei I believe she was wearing attatchments in her hair(hair was bigger than Scary Spice) The Roof:danced with 5 male and female dancers(big screen showing continuous footage of New York City at night) My All Close My eyes: Photos of her childhood on big screen. Daydream Interlude Dreamlover:wearing a black sheer dress(shear means almost see through) Ill be there:told unplugged story(very impromp phrasing of lyrics) added lyrics by TREY: "Sing Mariah" and "Sing it to me baby" During the line "fi you should ever find someone new..." she stops and says to Trey"give me your mic you sound too good tonight." break:Trey's solo Make It happen:with Hickam Airforce Choir Dont Let Go version One Sweet Day: Dedicated to a girl named Becky from Australia who listened to her music while going thru chemotherapy. She said Becky gave her a Jade heart. Crave group Seven Mile:performed "Just a memory"and Thankyou(Boys II Men song) "A League" also performed Fantasy:Remix with ODB on big screen in black and white. supposed to look like an old TV.she wore a white tank top and blue jeans. Great choreography. Used chairs dancers from the Roof joined her she showed pics from her tour:cooking in Japan/with a Koala/with Trey on balcony with leis (didnt have pic of her with Olivia Newton John) She stated I wanted to sing Babydoll but she didnt have time to rehearse it.She asked a girl "you Wanna sing it?"the girl said yeah and then Mariah said "What you talking about girl, this is my song" with her New York accent Introduced back up singers and sang "Pride A deeper love, pride a deeper love.pride a deeper love, ooh ooh ooh ooh"with Debra Cooper Breakdown:wardrobe from chair scene in the video. Here are some Concert Reviews of Australia
Great review of the concert! MARIAH DELIVERS ON CUE Last Night's First Night by Dino Scantena - music writer It's easy to hate Mariah Carey. All that squealing, those poncy princes pictures, her marriage to the head of her record company. It all wreaked of prefabricated pop star - just add a billion dollar promotional campaign. But, as the old Elvis cliche goes, 80 million Mariah fans can't be wrong. There's got to be something there to make her the biggest music star of her generation. And that's part of what made last night's show such a revelation. First, the audience was young. Very young. And mostly female. So much for the belief that it's our grandmothers keeping Mariah at the top of the charts. Then, of course, there's the startlet herself. Last night's show was nothing like a mannequin, pretty but inanimate, devoid of personality. Last night she proved she's quite the opposite. The start of the show looked like a re-creation of the immaculate conception, an electrical storm giving way to Mariah appearing on a rising platform. But she soon assured us she was very human. Between songs she chatted comfortably with the audience. Wearing a tiny fleshcoloured dress, she joked that anyone in the front rows thought they were copping an eyeful when she bent over, bad luck - she was also wear- ing a body stocking. Then there's that voice. What comes across on record as a synthesised, touched up instrument is a spine-tingling device live. The mid-range is powerful but then Mariah has the ability to extract notes never before heard from the voice box and so high that they've barely audible to the human ear. It was a big show too - five back-up singers and 13 dancers, all used conservatively and tastefully. Indeed, it felt like you were witnessing a classic Motown revue. Fun, dynamic, human. She may be the most successful singer of her generation, but last night's suprise was that Mariah may also be the best. Can you talk about potential when someone's already sold 90 million records? Let's hope so
Mariah's second Sydney concert! HI every1! Well..I went to the Mariah concert in sydney on the 6th feb..and it was excellent! The songs were the same as the Brisbane concert..but in between she sung bits of other songs..(like a country one and another one) and..someone in the crowd shouted out 'vanishing' and guess what??She sang most of Vanishing..with the piano coming in at times and the backing singers at the end..it was totally unrehearsed! The bass in the centre was really loud and really good...but when it came to high high notes...u couldnt hear them that good..but they were definitely there! The voice was very powerful all throughout. If it was whispery..it was still loud and not so whispery! But she did her loud voice most of the time. The low bits in Without You were the best! Most songs featured the dancers..including herself dancing! She talked to us about 'how to get an australian accent'...vegemite..her uncomfortable boots w/high heels...how she takes a long time to get ready..her water/lemon tea..and how the technicians shouldve waited before the song so they could put the vidoe of boyz ii men on..(which was supposeed to be on the screen but wasn't) and she was gonna eat a meat pie..but chickened out..coz some1 said it wasn't australiam. and she took photos of the audience as well.. She introduced the backing people..including vernon reid and melonie daniels...and of course trey lorenz The highlights were: Vanishing Make It Happen Hero Without You Dreamlover Fantasy (odb remix) Honey (bad boy remix) Vision Of Love My All and Aint Nobody by backing singers. The lighting was excellent with bright colours and patterns..and the drapes on the stage were a good idea. She came up through the stage several times. There were two screens on the side and in the centre as well..but this one showed other stuff...pictures of her..videos... And...the outfits were the same as the brisbane concert. If i think of anything else..ill write to vision..but for now..bye If there is a mc concert on...go to it! BTW, I didnt buy a programme as it costs $20-25..so if anyone bout one in sydney...could u PLEASE type the writing from it up..??PLEASE.THANKS. um...and...i saw bits of the breakdown video at the concert..and its really nice!ive heard the mo thugs remix on radio..and its great as well! Oh! She said she tried bugs, She was saying how cute the kangaroo and koala in the audience(bear toys) were..and the kangaroo was given to her at the emd. She received flowers and handed some of them to the audience front row. She asked us where to find these animals and a little girl who got on stage said 'the zoo'. cya Daniel Leelarthaepi
Here are some photos of Mariah's concerts in Australia!
Mariah signing CD's! Mariah came to Miranda (Sydney) Westfield Shopping Center. Die hard fans queued in the early hours and waited for 8 hours for their goddess to appear. Most of them weren't disappointed. Those who came early and were at the front of the queue all got a chance to meet Mariah. 400 tickets were given out but my estimates were that only about 250 maximum got a chance. Well, anyway, here is the whole story. When the queue started to build, they started giving out tickets which overruled the numbers assigned to them earlier. Anyway after handing out all 400 tickets, the queue was blocked off and only those with a ticket was allowed in and out the queue. The rest had to be content at getting a spot in the crowd to see Mariah. While waiting for Mariah to appear, most people sat in the queue and waited and also bought pre-release copies of Mariah's new single 'Breakdown'. You could also buy Butterfly the album and get a huge Butterfly poster too. We were also told that Mariah would only be signing a album or single only and one signature per person and NO pictures allowed once on stage. Anyway, the queue started to get restless and the crowd outside the queue was gathering too. Most now were standing inside the queue and watching the numerous Mariah videoclips which was shown on a huge 9 screens T.V. It is now, 1:50PM and the queue is waiting and the crowd outside the queue is packing the whole place. And to our disappointment, we were told by the speaker that Mariah would be 10 minutes late ;( Anyway with the MCT (Mariah Carey Time)approaching, Ugly Phil "a DJ on a popular radio countdown show" tells us tha Mariah is currently arriving on a helicopter and on the TV screens they showed us a live feed from the helicopter. The helicopter circled the Opera House, around the bridge, went past Darling Harbour and the Airport finally to arrive at Miranda to land on the roof with Mariah stepping out. The whole show was much like Puffy's intro at the American Music Awards, I and many others are still trying to figure out whether it was true or not. Anyway, Mariah came out onto stage and I was deafened by the screaming etc. Mariah immediatly started to sign a single item from the fans waiting in the queue and her bodyguard Wayne, made sure it was quick and that no one got really close to Mariah. Anyway I eventually got up there and got my Rolling Stone Magazine signed which was the most original thing that was signed that day by Mariah! Everyone else either got Butterfly signed, or her Butterfly poster or her tourbook. I could see that Mariah was surprised for me to bring my RS to be signed and she took her time and signed it well for me! YES! Jay
This is what it says in Mariahs Tourbook! ================================ Mariah Carey - singer, songwriter, producer, video director and best-selling female recording artist of the 1990's - exploded onto the global music scene six years ago and has continued to set higher and higher standards, shatter records, set new ones and sell a breakthrough 75 million albums, a total that very few artists ever approach during their entire career, let alone in just six years. On Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart, Mariah Carey's "Honey" off her new album "Butterfly" debuted at No.1. It's her third single to open in the top spot and her 12th No.1 overall, giving her the most chart-toppers of any solo female artist in the rock era. In the history of the Hot 100, only six singles have debuted at No.1 and she owns half of them. Her #1-selling debut album Mariah Carey, yielded a record-setting four consecutive #1 singles, earned two Grammy awards and sold in excess of 12 million copies worldwide. Mariah Carey also brought her 3 Soul Train Awards, 2 American Music Awards and a record 6 Billboard Awards. Mariah Carey was followed by 1992's Emotions and an MTV Unplugged EP. Music Box, released in 1993, held the #1 chart position for 8 weeks, and has sold an astounding 24 million copies worldwide to date. 1994 saw the release of Merry Christmas, already exceeding worldwide sales of 8 million. Mariah's first tour of major US markets in 1993 was a sellout. She has sold more albums than any other artist in Japan, three of those albums in excess of 2.3 million copies. In the spring of 1996, she sold out 3 performances in Japan's Tokyo Dome (a capacity of 156,000 seats) in under 30 minutes and she returns to Japan in January of '98 for another 4 dates in the Tokyo Dome. Tickets for each of these shows sold out within one hour. In the summer of 1996, Mariah sold out 4 major European venues: Frankfurt's Festhalle, Rotterdam's Ahoy, Paris' Bercy and London's Wembley Arena, in record time. Mariah has 12 #1 singles to her name, 5 reaching gold status, 5 platinum, and 1 double platinum. In 1995, Mariah Carey broke yet another record and became the only female ever to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 or the Hot R&B charts for her single "Fantasy," from her most recent #1 album, daydream. "Fantasy" spent 2 solid months at the top of the charts. Her next single, "One Sweet Day" also debuted at #1, making her the first recording artist in history to have two consecutive singles debut at #1. Her third release from Daydream, "Always be My Baby," also reached #1. For her efforts on Daydream, Mariah won 4 World Music Awards and 2 Billboard Awards. Since 1994, Mariah has been the spokesperson for the Fresh Air Fund, an organisation dedicated to providing innercity children with the opportunity to spend summers in the country camping with other kids like themselves and enjoy a wide variety of activities and learning opportunities. A career-awareness camp was named in honor, for the dedication she has shown and the over 1 million dollars in funds she has raised for the organisation she continues to represent and support. The inception of Crave Records in January of 1997, a new Sony Music Independent Labels record company, marks Mariah's latest impressive accomplishment. As CEO, Mariah will preside over all creative and business activities, using her experience and creative strength to help build careers for the artists on her label. ========================================= The Japanese Tourbook is sized 28x35 cm, has 31 pages and contains 12 photos from the Honey video, 8 photos from the Butterfly video, 6 photos from the Roof video, 4 photos from the Breakdown video and 5 photos from Camp Mariah.
BUTTERFLY WORLD TOUR- ASIA
Concert Venues for Asia
Tokyo Dome concert in 1998! January 11, Jan. 14, Jan 17, Jan 20! Taiwan, January 24, Municipal Stadium in Taipei!
Mariah in Taiwan concert! 24/1 was the coldest night in Taiwan and it rained BUT I was greatly divert by Mariah's Butterfly Tour Concert in Taipei. Mariah did a amazingly brilliant performance, not just singing but dramatic. Yes...I mean she acted what she played in Honey music video before singing Honey. She sang "Whenever You Call" she added this is the first time singing this track LIVE! Cuz Mariah swept all the audience, she said you are the BEST audience, we called for encore TWICE. The encore tracks are "Butterfly" and "Without You" for 1st time and "Hero" for the other. Oh...here is a wonderful news, Mariah said "Breakdown" will be the next single!!! She also did this song. I sould refer to the new image on Mariah...SEXY Mariah...She danced sex-pose w/ male dancer as singing "The Roof", "Fantasy" and showed her underwear unwarily as singing and acting "Honey" Oh...I can't believe what I saw when she did that. Besides, she changed TEN sexy dresses. Well...Here are song lists of Mariah's Taipei Conert: (Butterfly) 1. Emotions -Mariah got better condition than japan conert I have to say she sang perfectly 100%. Those high notes are WOW.... 2. The Roof -Pre-recording not lipsynching 3. My All 4. Close My Eyes -I swear Mariah turly looked at me for 5 secs cuz I was crying:~~~ This is my all time favorite Mariah song. CME is an incerdiblely comforting song. Imagining a girl w/ bad childhood memory like Mariah but she can face the music, touched the heartache and write it down as a song. I can finger out in my mind what Mariah want to express in this song. I just had that experience so I can help myself crying. 5. Daydream Interlude 6. Dreamlover -Mariah said "What am I doning?..." after doing DL...interesting..huh? 7. I'll Be There w/ Trey Lorenz -Trey sang very bad!!! Disharmony!!! Mariah introduced Trey's latest album will be out soon. 8. Make You Happy -Unbelivable..right? Mariah mentioned taht backvocal "Honey B Fly"..hoho... 9. Make It Happen 10.One Sweet Day w/ Boyz2Men -Oringinally Mariah wanna sing w/ 7 mile but I don't know why they changed this plan. (Mariah said "share the light share the love" then introduced the band and backvocals. She sang part of "A Deeper Love" w/ one of the backvocals while introducing her. And she called Melonie "DIVINE DIVA" I thought Mariah quite expect her. 11.Ain't Nobody -Backvocals did this song. 12.(Let's) Make A Night To Remember -Leading Vocals are Trey and Melonie. Melonie can't sing this song so she brought a crib note. 13.Fantasy (Bad Boy w/ ODB remix) -Pre-recording not lipsynching. After Fantasy Mariah learned how to say "I Love You" in Chinese. 14.Whenever You Call -Mariah didn't sang very well. She flattened I guess it was due to dancing as performing Fantasy. 15.Put You Hand -It's Pusta's song just for dancers performing. (James Bond theme) 16.Honey (Bad Boy Remix) -After Honey she said "Are you guys cold?".."NO".."It's Cold but show must go on. It's show business".."They told me it's warm here why they lied me. It's not warm here. It's PEOPLE IS WARM here!!!" 17.Breakdown 18.Butterfly 19.Without You 20.Hero It's really a unforgettalbe night!!! Sharing it w/ you. Take Care Ojay Chang
Great review of the Taiwan concert! The review is made by a Malaysian journalist called Jason Cheah. This reporter is great and he really liked Mariah's voice and all. One interesting thing I didn't know is that people in the houses next to the stadium also could see the concert -- for free!! ====================================== Cold wintry conditions couldn't keep away the 35 000 strong Taiwanese crowd flocking to the Taiwan Municipal Stadium for Mariah Carey's Butterfly concert tour. It wasn't the best of conditions for Carey to showcase her reputedly wide vocal range, not with the temperature dipping to as low as 7 degress celcius that wintry Saturday night two-and-a-half weeks ago. (Note:this review was published on 11-2-98. Mariah Carey, pop diva of this decade at least, with more than 80 million albums sold to her credit, gamely tried. If nothing else, you have to give her credit for that. "They told me it was going to be warm here,"she said at a press conference two days earlier. "Somebody lied." In any case, it was completely dreary weather that night what with the sun being clouded over for the best part of four days. "But the show must go on,"Carey assured the audience midway through her solid 120-minute set, which also served as a Chinese New Year bonus for the occupants of some high-rise apartments and office blocks with a good view of the stadium interior. They got themselves a free concert in the comfort of their warm houses and offices - but perhaps with muted sound. Starting off only five minutes late with an instrumental interlude based on the single 'Butterfly', Carey immediately began to test her vocal range when she appeared and started the night off with 'Emotions'. Vocal gymnastics continued with songs like 'My All' and 'Dreamlover'. And it has to be said that despite criticism from certain quarters for too much vocal histrionics, Carey sounded a lot better live on stage than on vinyl or in studio. If one does it well, it takes your breath away, and Carey at least came close to that. Special guest Trey Lorenz made his scheduled appearance on a duet with Carey covering the Jackson's 'I'll Be There'- he has been with her throughout the tour. But if Carey at least gave a good account of herself vocally despite the wintry conditions, it wasn't quite the Lorenz's night. His vocals failed to impress at the most crucial moment - when he completely lost his voice to the cold night air on a few of the higher notes he tried to reach. Nevertheless he gamely went on to acquit himself satisfactorily when he got his solo trip with his new single 'Make You Happy'. Boyz II Men appeared next as guests on video, crooning 'One Sweet Day' with her, before Carey went offstage again for another costume change, leaving her five back-up singers to engage the audience, first with a rendition of Rufus and Chaka Khan's 'Ain't Nobody', and then, joined again by Lorenz, a rather messy rendition of the old Shalamar disco hit 'A Night To Remember'. Carey's dancers got their say with old-fashioned impressive breakdancing before she returned to sing 'Whenever You Call' (according to her it was the first time she was performing the song on stage), proving vocally that while her current legion of fans may be accepting her new image, ballads remain her strong point. Perhaps after all, it's because her vocal range is natural. Or perhaps it was because that despite the cold conditions and the, ummm ... skimpy outfits she seems to be parading around in these days, she gave it all she had. "It's a little bit cold for these ensembles," was what she teased the audience with on the brevity of her concert wardrobe. And they couldn't really tell if it was Carey or a stand-in in a fighting sequence that wouldn't do her credit in any Bond movie. This was performed during the lead single from the current album, 'Honey'(watch the video and you'll see the link). 'Vision Of Love', Carey's first solo single release from way back in 1990, was next, which certainly brought memories of her earlier days, while another video guest appearance, this time by rappers Bones, Thugs n' Harmony on the new single 'Breakdown' brought the audience back to the present. And in keeping with the image, the rendition comes complete with a bed to frolic on, the way she did in the video. It goes without saying that encores were certainly called for, even in the cold night, and which Carey duly delivered with the title track from her current album 'Butterfly' followed by crowd favourite 'Hero' before stepping off stage again. With the enthusiastic Taiwanese crowd still reluctant to vacate the cold stadium, Carey returned once again with the Harry Nilsson cover 'Without You', just for the audience to lap up before making their way home to some hot Chinese tea and a warm bed. For what it's worth, Carey certainly made it "a night to remember" (aptly rendered by her back-up singers and Trey Lorenz mid-way through the concert); her vocals proving that she has lost none of her versatility - husky at one point, soaring the next and with just the right amount of vocalisation without overdoing it. And with performances like this, one can be assured that Carey's legion of fans will continue to soak up whatever the lady has to offer for quite a while yet. Next up, look out for Mariah Carey on the silver screen. ========================================
